Show HE TAKES ISSUE VITil HAVVORTH II. C Adams Argues That Christianity and Socialism Social-ism Are Not Antagonistic but Go Hand in Hand. saasaMBaasBBa To The TelegTam: In his Saturday sermon in THE TELEGRAM, the Eev. Mr. Hayworth discusses the question, "How shall the world realize the Social ideal through . Socialism or the old methods of' Jesus , Christ and his chureht" V Takinpr the question as stated, Mr. Hayworth assumes that the Social ideal shall be realized, either through Socialism So-cialism or bv the methods of the Christian Chris-tian ehurcn. His question does not permit the supposition that the teachings teach-ings of both together, working in harmony, har-mony, could bring the world to the realization of the Social ideal, but to the contrary, he infers that they are antagonistic principles. In the beginning of his argument be was "astounded'" to hear a "distinguished "distin-guished divine make this assertion": "The Socialist movement is the greatest great-est movement of the ages." Then he Proceeds to state that "this brother oubtless meant the co-operation of all classes," etc., and this being the spirit of Socialism, all good men can heartily say "amen" to tt. Now, if all good men can say "amen" to it, why was Mr. Hayworth "astounded" to near the assertion from the "distinguished divine "t The Encyclopedia Britannica is authority au-thority ior this statement: "The ethics eth-ics of Socialism are identical with the ethics of Christianity." Perhaps Mr. Hayworth is "astounded" at that statement also, but Socialists universally univer-sally accept it as true. Continuing on in . his argument, Mr. Hayworth emphasizes the meaning of his text by asking the questions: "Which ' is correct? To which shall we give our undivided supportt" The first question implies that one or the j other is incorrect, and the second im-1 plies that if Christianity is supported, Socialism must be rejected. Then he calls attention to the first Socialistic experiment in Jerusalem under un-der apostolic supervision. The very first attempt to "realize the Social ideal" in all history, undertaken by the immediate followers of Jesus Christ, who received information directly di-rectly from him, and yet, according to Mr, Havworth, the experiment was antagonistic an-tagonistic to the Christian religion! Whero did they get those ideas if not from Christ t According to Mr. Hayworth 's argument argu-ment those apostles were anti-Chris-tianl They were attempting to put ideas into prartie which would destroy "personal pride" and "good morals," and "holding to principles of communism commu-nism in matters of property" they wbuld "naturally" be led to adopt that principle in regard to wives. Were the early apostles' ideas, or are Mr. Hayworth 's ideas, antagonistic to the Christian religion ..4,rC! H. C. ADAMS. City. |
