Show SENATOR BAILEY'S CASE. . Senator Bailey of Texas, after having been under an investigation for months, has been exonerated by the Texas Legislature. We believe the charge was that he, when Senator of the United States, had acted act-ed as attorney for Rockefeller. , It is only a few years since air Senators did that who had the 'ability to obtain employment. Daniel Webster made some of his greatest fame in his practice prac-tice before the Supreme court. Senator Edmunds probably received ten times as much money from lients while Senator as he did from the United , States. But no matter, the Legislature of his own State xonerated Mr. Bailey. The press of the East admits ad-mits his ability,. but a good many of them are in: dignant that in his speech after exoneration he lost his temper, called his enemies names,- and that his language generally was not Senatorial. They admit that the investigation was started by personal ene mies out of personal spite, but they regret that during dur-ing the trial he could not keep his old Senatorial dignity. dig-nity. They forget that he was in Texas. A man is like a stream, he cannot rise higher than his source, and had he been dignified all through and received his vindication with calm gratitude and said nothing, the chances are he would have been beaten the next time he ran for Senator. His friends wanted to hear his opinion of his enemies. ene-mies. He knew it. He wanted to give his opinion in a State where men sometimes are caljed to an accounting ac-counting when they use harsh language toward their fellowmen. j Senate Bailey may often make mistakes, but he never made a mistake when for five minutes, through which hjs speech lasted, he forgot all his dignity and hurled all the invective that had been gathering in his soul for months at the men who, to gratify a personal per-sonal spite, had made him so much trouble. |
