Some of the actors were late in getting In from the East, and when they did arrive ar-rive It waa not noticed that Mrs. A. K. Caldera, wife of the European juggler, carried a large bundle In her arms. She hastily glanced at the bulletin board, and then made for the room assigned her in the baaement beneath the stage, where she deposited the baby she waa carrying. jerore going any runner, it is pernaps. necessary to state that this infant, besides being the first in the family, has a unique history. Baby arrived on an Illinois Central Cen-tral train as It was nearing New Orleans seven weeks ago, just prior to the open-I open-I ing of the Calderas engagement on the Orpheum circuit. In honor of the unlocked un-locked for and novel event in the Pullman drawing-room, the girl was christened Orphelia, aa a delicate compliment to the vaudeville profession. To return: Orphelia was given a bottle to Juggle while mamma unpacked the trunks and papa was getting his apparatus appa-ratus and "props" ready on the stage for his act. In due season Mrs. Caldera glanced at the baby, and finding that it was asleep, slipped out of the stage door to search for quarters In a hotel. All waa serene until the orchestra, which also arrived late. -started to rehearse re-hearse the headline act In the basement. At the first wail of the violin, an echo slightly off key, rame from one of the dressing-rooms. Director Welhe stopped his men,, and a qiery was depicted on each countenance. Soon the wall developed de-veloped Into a yell, and all stampeded for the dressing-room to Investigate. Indignant Indig-nant Orphelia was discovered gnawing her gums on the bottom of the bottle. As Welhe Is not a father, he was at a loss how to proceed. Several of the musicians mu-sicians giggled, and then somebody said: "Send for Packham; he has some kids of his own". The floor superintendent was summoned, but all of the "Hush-a-abys" and "There-then's" he could muster were unavailing. In the meantime, all unconscious above. Caldera. the juggler, was getting the stage ready for his act. Finally Mrs. Younger, wife of the property man, ap- Jeared and -took charge of the Indignant nfant, and five minutes later the mother returned. What she said to her husban dls a profound pro-found secret, but both were so agitated that Stage Manager Warner decided to put their act on third, so they could calm their own and the ruffled feelings Of Orphelia, And that is the true story why Caldera, Cal-dera, the European juggler, did not open the show at the Orpheum last night. |
