Thla applies to America as well aa to numerous countries which were not directly concerned In the World war, but which permitted themselves to be awept off their economic feet, aa It were, by Influences created by the greatest straggle of all ages. In relation to cur own country, however, there can be gleaned much "ativfactlon by the fact that the sudden and terrific Jar sustained by the economic structure demonstrated That it rested upon a substantial foundation and which was no disturbed by the unprecedented storm that rased about the superstructure. It cannot be denied that the people of tha country as a whole were responsible for the creation of the storm which swept over the nation. It has ben declared by a leading economist that tha people of America, during a portion of the year at least, were living In a "fool's paradise." Such a criticism might be regarded by many aa unduly severe, but It must be conceded that at tlmea there was displayed a, tendency to Ignore "future possibilities, probabilities and certainties. There were those who saw th Impending storm and realized that an era of reconstruction waa Inevitable, and to these belong the credit of saving tha country from a far worse experience than that which really took place. Among the lessons te be learned and remembered by the events of the past year were two of a directly adverse character, and these were overbuying over-buying and underbuying.
