Show PLANS TO CONSUME SMOKE BY USE OFGAS Inventor Propose Flaming Jet in Furnace at Period Pe-riod of Ignition Abatement of smoke njiiftancei In Salt Luke and elsewhere U promised In an Idea conceived by Roy Harrt" of Harrin ilroa., manufacturer' afrenta with offices in the Continental Hank building, who has received notice from the I'nited States patnnt office In Washington, D. The inventor holds that It can he made entirely practical and that by the expenditure of a small amount every furnace can be made practically smokeless. OUTL'NE OF 8CHEME. It is claimed the flame thus introduced would cause the smoke to burn and be consumed as fuel before it reached the smokestack. An suto- rrmUr rutout would shut ftff the riaws from the fts Jet aftec the period of time needed to consume the smoke and until the flumes from the fire proper acted as a smoke consumer. Mr. Harris declared today that his Idea will do away entirely with smoke at tie time of firlntc, the period when the Brett volume of smoke is created by furnaces. He said the objections of experts to the idea on the ground that the burning of the smoke in the combuation chamber might cause an intense heat and burn out boiler plates could be overcome by the introduction in-troduction of protective plates at a small expense. MORE HEAT OBTAINED. On small house furnaces, he would attach a water Jacket Jo the smoke pipe at Its Juncture with the furnace, and thus take care of the burning smoke. According to the Inventor the expense ex-pense of installation would be small and would be more than paid for by .the additional heat provided. Ordinary city gas would be used to create the small tongue of flume necessary nec-essary to ignite the smoke. It is suid the idea has been practically prac-tically demonstrated and that where used the furnaces have made no smoke whatever during; the period of firing. |
