Show Thr Retiring- Officials f jTTHE mere fact that the retiring state and ! county officials were defeated in the last election doesnot signiijTlhat they step from public life without a measure of appreciation for their services. On the contrary, tliey take with them the kindly sympathy of a host of constituents constitu-ents and the friendly support of their recent political opponents. Too often political contests become personal per-sonal battles and life feuds, but the really big men in public life are those who suffer defeat as gracefully and modestly as they achieve victory. vic-tory. .When the elections are over the wouml of the campaign should heal and all should be striving toward the same goal a bigger and better state. The men who retire from public office at this time have served the people long and well. Undoubtedly the election figures signify that some mistakes were made, but error is a human failing and easily forgiven. Against these mistakes may be measured a long list of endeavors and accomplishments accom-plishments which is proof positive of the desire to serve the public faithfully. The public should be and undoubtedly is grateful for the services rendered by the retiring officials. Their records reflect general credit to the state and county, being free of the taint of graftand perfidy which enters into public careers in, so many of the American states. The retiring retir-ing officials have kept faith with the people and no doubt the public will record its grateful appreciation appre-ciation in more substantial form in the years to come. 9 |
