Show Public Baby Clinics Can't Be Reopened This Year, Health Commissioner Says I Renewal of the city baby clinics probably would be inadvisable, even if finances permitted it, although the volunteer clinics are not accommodating accommo-dating as many infants as the city clinics did. Dr. L E. Viko. city health commissioner, said Monday. I The depleted health department ! budget will mske it impossible to i consider reopening the city clinics this year, he said. The public clinics I were sbsndoned last September 1 and replaced by clinics conducted voluntarily volun-tarily by baby specialists. The volunteer workers, aided by I cooperating relief workers, seem to be reaching the babies actually in need lot diet supervision better than ever before Dr. Viko said. 1 "The city clinics were, of necessity, open to all who cared to attend, and , were rapidly becoming webbing sta tions tor the babies of women who could sfford to psy for a doctor's service." As an indication of this, Dr. Vlko pointed to record, showing that nearly every baby admitted to the clinics a year ago was well nourished, while a far different situation exists today. The total number ot babies treated during 1931 was far below the 1031 total. Last year there were 170 clinics attended by 6827 infants, as sgainst 204 clinics for 11.1M babies in 131. A total of 191 new cases were admitted ad-mitted in 132. compared with 1020 new cases In 1931. An increasing number ot new admissions ad-missions haa been noted during the past month. Clinics are held at the Neighborhood house on Wednesdays and at the public safety building on Thursday mornings. |
