HOUSE SPIKES TARIFF RAISE Bill to Boost Duties From Cheap Money Countries Decisively Beaten (. raiua mea WASHINGTON, Feb. IS Republican Republi-can effortg to fore action on drastic tariff increase legislation failed today when the house voted not to consider the Crowther bill to boost Import duties du-ties on products from nations with depreciated currency. This action was equivalent to defeat de-feat of the bill, with the vote coming on a motion of discharge of the ways and means committee from further consideration of th tariff Increase legislation. This group, heavily Democratic, had refused to take action on the Crowther measure and similar bills, all designed to increase import duties to meet the "threat" of foreign competition com-petition from countries with cheapened cheap-ened money. Republicans forced a record roll-call roll-call with their discharge petition, but were beaten back by a virtually solid Democratic vote. Speaker Garner announced the vote as 212 to 174.
