Layia, one of the fastest sprinters In the West, died recently of catarrhal fever at Churchill Downs, Louisville, Ky. Her loss is a severe blow to Edward Ed-ward Corrlgan, who depended on her to represent his stable in the short distance dis-tance events this year. The mare was 5 years old, by Friar's Balsam, out of Lady Paramount. Rowing1. The Yale-Harvard boat races this year will be held on the Thames at New" London. Conn.. June 25tln There will, as usual, be three races, the 'Varsity eight at four miles and the 'Varsity four and freshman eight at two miles. There will be three scullers at the Henley regatta this summer from, the United State. These are Juvenal of Philadelphia. Demorelll of New Or-i leans and Titus of New York. AH three of these men are in training for the j reratta. The rowing situation at Corntll has brightened up materially within the last few weeks and Coach Courtney predicts that this year's eight will be as strong as the one cf last year. A majority of the candidates for the 'Varsity boat will remain at Ithaca during the Easter East-er holidays, so that they will not lose anything in their practice. The United State3 naval cadets may have to give up rowing this spring on account of their inability to secure a suitable rowing shell In time for the regularly scheduled races. The new boat is needed because of the accident of April 2nd, when the shells of the three first crews were swamped and almost al-most totally wrecked in the attempt to rescue them. ' Golf. The committee on the revision of the rules of golf, consisting of -C B. Mac-donald, Mac-donald, chairman: G. H. Wendelor and Walter J. Travis, has completed Its work, and the rules and American interpretations in-terpretations have been issued in pamphlet form by the United States Golf association. The open tournaments to be held by the Country club of Brooklyn this season sea-son will occur on May 21st. 22nd and 23rd and October 22nd, 23rd and 24th. Owing to the prevalence of scarlet fever among the caddies at the Onwent-sla Onwent-sla Golf club it Is probable that the members will go without these convenient con-venient adjuncts of the game this spring.- The Chicago Golf club has placed its course at the disposal of the Onwentsia golfers until June 1st. The public course at Forest park, Brooklyn, is to be extended to eighteen holes this season. The old nine-hole course proved inadequate for the demands de-mands made on it by Brooklyn players, play-ers, and as the necessary pronerty is available the city will begin the work of extension at once. Baseball. The Boston baseball enthusiasts do not like the foul strike rule, and have started to get up a petition to have the rule abolished if possible.
