At meeting of the executive committee 'of the elevated railway employees Jn JIarlern last night a general strike which would have tied up every line In this city this morning was narrowly averted. The men understood they had received a final refusal of their demands on the officials of the Manhattan Elevated Railway company for a working schedule of nine consecutive hours. '.. ,". ..... Just before the members of the committee assembled however, one of the committeemen received a dispatch from the superintendent of the road asking the committee of eight to meet the officials again within the next two days for a further conference. Considering that this invitation held out a hope that their demands for shorter hours might be granted, the men decided not to go out They are determined, however, to call a strike at. their next meeting if they cannot obtain the working schedule they desire. - |
