Show "FRA ELBERTUS" ENDS- SCANDAL OUT OF COURT , Philistine Editor Pays Up and Agrees to Support Child; More Trouble Brewing.. BUFFALO, N. T.. June 2. Rather than have the details of his' relations with Miss Alice Moore publicly revealed, re-vealed, Elbert Hubbard editor of the Philistine, known to fame as "Fra Elbertus," the genius of East Aurora, and the author of "A Message to Garcia" went into court and let his attorney, Arthur C. Wade, the criminal crimi-nal lawyer of Jamestown, make a, secret se-cret settlement of the claim which has Ion? been pending against him. The suit against Hubbard has been on the Supreme court calendar for two years. It was brought against the writer ty- Attorney Wayland Wood- worth, who sued on behalf of Miss Moore to recover $3000. The contention was made that Hubbard had agreed to pay $10 a week for the maintenance of a male child, of which Miss Moore became the mother in 1895. The suit was to recover the price of 322 weeks' board, less a small amount which had been from time to time contributed. In the expectation that the case would be a hard-fought one, Eugene M. Bartlett. who represented Woodworth. had delved Into the private life of the author. Hubbard's attorney, Arthur C. Wade, knew Bartletfs ability as a cross-examiner, and as the East Aurora Au-rora sage was loath to have the matter mat-ter receive Any wider publicity than it has already attained he has ordered a settlement in full, and in an .agreement .agree-ment had admitted the paternity of the child. This case does not close the troubles of "Fra Elbertus." Because of the admitted relations of her husband with Miss Moore, Mrs. Hubbard has left her gifted lord, and has sued for a divorce. |
