Show NEVADA'S NEW AND OLD CAMPS. , - .. The wonders of Nevada are beginning to astonish the world the wonders of Goldfield, of Bullfrog, of Manhattan, of Fairview, of Ely and of Tonopah, creations cre-ations all in the last four or five years, and such creations crea-tions as make them today a concernment in every t financial center of the world. And some of the old camps are coming to the front, and threatening to eclipse their former glories. , Among them we may name Tuscarora, and Manhattan Manhat-tan which is only another name for the Jefferson district, dis-trict, which was worked thirty-five years ago, and last, but not least, Pioche. Pioche was one of the original wonders, because it was 250 miles from any modern transportation, and yet it gave up tens of millions of dollars. Now, -since the discovery of the cyanide process, it has ' been found that lying right beside the great deposits out of which the original treasure was taken, there is a belt of mineral which contains probably more wealth than was taken from the old mines. One little lit-tle property there has $70.000. worth of ore developed. devel-oped. Extensive workings are going on to renew the old mines and to extract their treasures. In another six weeks the railroad will be in there and the first any one knows Pioche will rewrite its name on the map as one of the greatest bullion-producers of Nevada. It seems most strange. Thirty-four years ago there were sixty-five men there that had killed from one to five men apiece, and those who had only killed one were mightily desirous of emulating those that had killed five, and they were a wild crowd. They looked every newcomer iu the face squarely; they were ready for business, ready to divide their purse with, or to make u hole through, any man that they liked or disliked. In those days the bullion had to be" carried by stage 250 miles to the railroad, and we have a suspicion suspi-cion that some of those who helped to dig the ore helped to rob the stages. Ye have no certain knowledge knowl-edge of that factTbut if a message could be received ' from Jack Harris, who now for some years has been on the lower levels (.speaking in a Biblical sense,", we think he would confirm this story. That is, the population was up to any kind of a game. They could break a man's heart with their generosity or they could cut his heart out without . any compunctions of conscience, if they did not like the expression in his eyes. Now. a new race is in there. Mining will be on the dead square. The reduction of ore will le reduced re-duced to an absolute science. Every cent will have to be accounted for. But the profits are going to be more than in the old days. All hail to new Pioche and may it live long and prosper. |
