Show MAKE INQUIRY THOROUGH. Chief Sheets has demanded from the Mayor and Council an investigation of the charges that hare been publicly made against him by certain partisan newspapers of this city. '". We take it that he wants no whitewash, and more, that he does not desire a verdict of two to one. It is a most serious matter, and THE TELEGRAM begs to suggest to the Mayor and Council that for the sake of the cause we are all trying to uphold, that this investigation is so important that it should be conducted before the entire Council sitting in committee, com-mittee, of the whole, with the City Attorney to conduct con-duct the investigation ? that when it is over, the most bitter enemy of good government will be stilled by the result. All that honest men want, even from their enemies, ene-mies, is justice. The proper thing is to treat Chief Sheets as innocent inno-cent until he is proven guilty. This is the more necessary ne-cessary because the newspapers that assail him are given to making reckless charges, and that disposition disposi-tion will not be hushed unless the investigation is 6o open and thorough that the result will be accepted accept-ed as just by honest men. The party in power went into office on the promise of a square deal. It did not guarantee that it could change the hearts of men, but that if any in places of trust should fail in their duties, it would not shield or whitewash the wrong. There must be no failure' now. Chief Sheets has been shamefully. wronged, or he ought not to be Chief of Police. Let us have the full-facts in such form that the public, will be satisfied when the final result is reached. ; . |
