BAXT PALACE Roller skatinj, scenic railway, etc 'With beautiful stage settings, pretty cos-tames cos-tames and tuneful musio the' Stewart Opera company opened its week's engagement at the Salt Lake Theater laat night, in an auspicious auspi-cious way. The opera was "The Two Roses," - a musical adaptation of "She Stoops to Con-oner," Con-oner," and the amusing possibilities of the story were well brought out. The prima donna soprano. Miss Mabel Day, who takes the dual role of Rose de Coureelles, the lady of quality, and Rosie Marie, the barmaid, has voice of fine range and sweetness and , is clever actress. Carl Haydn, as the lover, lov-er, has pleasing tenor and his voice blends well with Miss Day's in duet parts. His solos also gained much applause. William G. Stewart, the baritone, has a fair voice, and the -comedian, George W. Leslie, does soma good work, Susan, the rustie maid, has a good contralto voice, with a alight lisp that rives an additional charm. Miss Lyon, as Lady Jane, a friend of Rose, is pretty, and wears dainty and picturesque clothes, which seems to be the purpose of her role. Bowman Ralston haa an excellent bass voice and made clever country squire. The chorus is pretty, pret-ty, well costumed and sing exceedingly well. The groupings are especially effective and the dancing graceful. The scene settings are above the average. The audience was not so large as the attraction deserved. "The Two ' Roses" will be given again tonight and "Dorothy" will be presented for the first time at the Wednesday matinee. The bill for Friday and Saturday will be "Babetta." One of the best features -on the Orpheum's bill this week is the kinodrome. Two sets f stirring pictures are given, one being "A Tragedy on a Train" and the other "A Jail Bird's Escape." The headliner is Margaret Wycherly and her company in the protean drama, In Self-Defense." It is a stirring tragedy, in the course of which Miss Wycherly Wycher-ly represents seven entirely different character, charac-ter, requiring eome lightning-like changes in tnske-up. In all Miss Wycherly shows herself her-self te b an actress of more than ordinary ability. The playlet itself ia intensely inter- eUng and dramatic. Charles Sharp does a funny German comedy stunt and last night kept the crowd in a roar of Ian enter. Ferry, the "human frog," opens a bill with a wonderful won-derful and weird contortion act. Other fea-tura, fea-tura, in order of merit, are the Robert De -. lifft trio in an acrobatic stunt; the Oliviera fmsieal tWo and Lillian Ashley in songs and . fsinee.
