Show AMERICAN WINS BALLOON RACE James Gordon Bennett Cup Captured by Lieut Frank I P. Lahm in the Balloon I United States. PABIS, Oct. 2. All the uncertainty regarding the result of the balloon race for the James Gordon Bennett cup, started from here on Sunday afternoon, was ended at noon today, when a dispatch dis-patch was received by the Aero club announcing that the Hon. C. C. Polls and his companion, Col. Capper, in the balloon Britannia, landed at Sandring-ham Sandring-ham Upland at 6:30 last night, 26 hours from the time of their departure from Paris, thus establishing that Lieut. Frank P. Lahm, 8ixty cavalry. United States army, the American competitor in the race, who descended near Whitby yesterday m the balloon United States, is the winner. Signor von Wilier, Italy, is second; Count de la Vaulx, France, third, and Hon. C. S. Polls, Great Britain, fourth. Some anxiety was felt on account of Mr. Polls, it being feared that he had attempted to cross the North sea. The delay in reporting his descent is not yet explained. The beautiful cup presented for competition com-petition by James Gordon Bennett becomes be-comes a trophy of the Aero club of America. The first cash prize of $2900 goes to Lieut. Lahm and the endurance medal to Mr. Polls, who was the longest long-est in the air. I |
