Show EfTORTS TO HERD Off DEfJOCRHTS; INPLUENCE TO KEEP PHRTY ALIVE Influences are at work in different parts of the State to prevent the disbanding of the Democratic party which is threatened. The announced-meeting of the Democratic State executive committee, which has been postponed from day to day since last weekwill be held tonight; when the party situation will be discussed. Not in Salt Lake, but also in Weber, Cache and other counties with large votes, there are signs of disintegration, and the "mysterious "myste-rious influence" is said to be moving industriously to prevent pre-vent the surrender of the Democratic organization. It is believed the '.influence" will be felt at tonight Y meeting. Fusion f No, I don't think that we want any of it. The Republicans have taken all that they can take from us and I for one don't propose to join hands with them in helping them to elect a single man. If the city goes to the bad because of maladministration by any party, the Democrats will have the consolation ' of knowing that the were in no way responsible for the condition.". ' Would Not Spend Money. Another prominent member of tfre party stated that he was in favor of the party putting a ticket in the field next fall and every election, no matter mat-ter if .ther did not elect a man in fifty years. .' This man was in favor of naming nam-ing as candidates on the next ticket the best man :wbo could be secured for each position. i"l would not be in favor of assessing ante candidate a single cent for campaign cam-paign expenses, nor would I be in favor of making an active campaign in which money was needed. It is true that we might not elect a single man, but we would at least give the members of the party - an -opportunity of expressing their honest conviction at the polls." Fusion Proposition. ...... A number of Democrats have already been approached by members of the Republican party on the subject of fusion, fu-sion, lii at least two instances it is known that they were turned down cold. It is not lielieved that the question ques-tion of fusion will be seriously considered consid-ered at the meeting tonight, even if it is mentioned. It is said, however, that a number of resolutions have been prepared, some of which will be offered at the meeting meet-ing tonight. Some of them are of the red-hot, sizzling kind. The State executive committee of the Democratic party will meet in the office of Chairman L. R. Martineau at 8 o 'clock this evening, according to the statement of a member of the committee. commit-tee. The question of the future policy of the party will form the principal discussion. dis-cussion. While the committee has no power to disband the party, it has the power to call a State convention for that purpose, pur-pose, should it see fit to do so. It is not believed, however, that the committee commit-tee will call such a convention. - , T.The "mysterious influence" is at werk.." r. A number of members of the party, b6th Mormon and non-Mormon, have announced an-nounced to members of the committee that they would refuse to be disbanded and that no matter what aetion the committee or a convention might take on the subject there would be a Democratic Demo-cratic ticket in the field, in Salt Lake City at least, next fall. ' Views of a Stalwart. In speaking of the matter last night a State leader of the party said: x "The party will not disband. It cannot. It is true that we were beaten two weeks ago, and beaten badly, and that, too, by an influence over which we had no control. But the Democratic partv of Utah is but a small part of a great national party a party that will not be downed, either in Utah or anywhere any-where else, by a defeat brought about by any church, man or set of men. The party has principles to fight for and as long as those principles are true, just so long will the party go on fighting victory or no victory. We confront a peculiar condition in this State, but we will keep on fighting until we have won our position and are vindicated in the stand which we have taken." Scouts Fusion Idea. When asked what he thought about fusion with the Republicans in the next citv campaign he said: '"'I do not know what the majority of the party will be in favor of in the next campaign, but if I can get a few others to stand with me, and I think that I can, there will be a Democratic ticket in the field next fall, no matter what the majority of the party does. The remarks quoted above were made bv men who are honest in their convictions, con-victions, and these will be used by the "mysterious influence," along with others, to prevent any action looking to the abandonment . of the Democratic organization. - Disturbance In Cache. Cache county is just now the object of special solicitude. Since the election and the complete rout of the Democratic Demo-cratic ticket plans have been making for the disorganization of the local party par-ty in that county. County Chairman Hyrum Hayball has stated that this would' be done, it being I a mere farce, in the face of existin? I |
