Show GLSS FACTORY LOOKING POR STARTING PLANT Another indication that the day of a Greater Salt Lake is at hand is shown in a letter that was received by Orson HHewiett, president of the Manufacturers' Manufac-turers' and Merchants' association this morning from the Illinois Glass company, com-pany, of Alton, 111. ' - While in Denver last week Mr. Hewlett Hew-lett wrote to the Illinois Glass company, com-pany, asking it to Investigate the field at Salt Lake with a view of locating a branch factory here. In this letter Mr. Hewlett told of the former efforts of a glass company to run a plant here, and spoke of the causes that contributed to the failure of the enterprise. The answer came to Mr. Hewlett this morning, and the contents of the letter were of the most satisfactory character. char-acter. In the letter the management of the company asks that full information informa-tion b3 sent to the company as soon ns possible, concerning the deposits of glass sand and clay, their proximity to Salt Lake City, the freight rates, and other details. The letter also asked that full Information be given at once concerning the supply of lime rock in the quarries to the city. Information was also sought regarding the coal supply, the heat producing 'qualities of coal and coke produced in the State, and the freight rates on these materials mater-ials to the yards in this city. In addition to all this, the letter requested re-quested that samples of the raw materials ma-terials be sent the company at once, at the expense of the writers, in order that full and complete analysis might be made at as early a date as possible. pos-sible. The company stated that Its representatives repre-sentatives were thoroughly familiar with the freight facilities of the city and the tributary area, as well as with the market conditions and the possibilities possi-bilities for outlets for their products. At the home factory, at Alton, Ill-there Ill-there are employed more than 5000 men and women. The wages paid to expert glass workers are higher than almost any other labor in the industrial world.
