Show CHAMPAGNE WAS SMILEY'S UNDOING Waiter at the Elks' Club Turns Burglar; Pleads Guilty in Police Court. Champagne was the undoing of Alfred Al-fred Smiley. Until lust Sunday Smiley, who is an Afro-American, was employed in the Elks' club as a waiter, but he is no longer employed there. , When the employees of the club opened the building Sunday morning, they discovered dis-covered that during the night the cash, register had been opened, and that $34.; and a bottle of champagne were missing. During the few hours that followed a search was made for Smiley, who was known to have been Intoxicated Saturday night, and who failed to show up for duty Sunday morning. Smi'.ey was found and he was still intoxicated. He was locked up on suspicion and confessed last night that he had entered the club and that he had stolen money. In view of the fact that Smiley confessed, con-fessed, the officials of the club were not disposed to push the case as vigorously as might have been the case otherwise, and Smiley was arraigned this morning in the police court on a charge of petty larceny. He pleaded guilty, and Judge Diehl, who is ;i prominent Klk. remanded re-manded Smiley to the court of Judge J. J. Whitaker for sentence. |
