Show Guards Called to Scofield 19 Years Ago In the twenty-seven years since Utah became a stuie the national guard of the state has been called out but once to quell disorders and that was on November No-vember 34, 1903. when Adlutant General Gen-eral C. S. Hurt'-n ordered the entire guard Into active service. Proclamation was Issued by Oovernor Heber M. Wells on November 23 calling out and ordering the militia of the state kruwn as the national guard Into active service to preserve the peace of I the state and to prevent the destruction I of life and property. The cnuse fur the calling out of the guard then was the same as at present, a general strike in Die coal mines at Scofleld, Castlcgate and Sunn side, and the reason wus the name, a aen- eral strike to compel an Increase in I the wages of the coal miners. The guard was ordered to the scene of the trouble and remained there for practically four weeks, when a compromise between the fuel company com-pany and the strikers was effected, order restored and the mines opened. |
