C Stanton takes exception to views expressed In a recent editorial concerning certain limitations limitations lim lim- proposed for tor the lend lease bill for aid to Britain Mr Stanton says he is very sorry to note our attitude on the lend lease bill bUI We are afraid that Mr Stanton and perhaps perhaps per per- haps other readers may have misunderstood our stand The Telegram favors the lull fullest est s sort ort of support for lor Britain but we feel leel strongly strong strong- ly l y that this support should stop short of actual I involvement in the war in Europe and also short of serious threat to the future continuance continuance continuance ance of our democratic system It was for these reasons and not for lor the purpose of interfering with maximum aid to Britain short of war that we favored three important important im un limitations in the lend lease bill First the specific prohibition of U. U S. S naval convoys to Britain which we believe would lead inevitably in e to war Second and third a time limit on the vast powers granted to the president and provision for periodic r reports ports to congress by the president on his use of those powers t these hese two stipulations we believe would help t to o insure that once the emergency is past the dictatorship semi established in America by the l lease lend bill would be abolished and we would return to democratic of processes government and 1 These are actually not serious restrictions on out all aid to Britain We agree with Mr Stanton such aid should be extensive and that our best chance of escaping destructive war Isto isto is isto to help Britain to resist and defeat the totalitarIan totalitarian totalitarian onslaught |
