Show Devils, Lions In Title Game F ri Game Set For 2:30 P.M. On Payson Gridiron; Winner GetsNebo Crown Close and Exciting Battle Anticipated Friday With Both Clubs Evenly Matched; Devils Have Most Wins Over Lions Springville's improved Red Devils will battle the Pay-son Pay-son Lions Friday afternoon on the Lions' gridiron in the Nebo Division championship game beginning at 2:30 p. m. CIoho Game Expected i Friday's grid contest is expected to bt! one of the best games seen in the district for several- years. Eoth teams have showed strength in defeating B- Y. High and Spanish Span-ish Fork. Payson boasts several returning vets from last year, including in-cluding Captain Quigley and Cohen Co-hen at ends, Turvitt and Jewitt, Olscn, Coker on the line, and Hill-man, Hill-man, Wilson and Partridge in the backficld, to bolster their hopes of a win Friday. Springville's club has more returning vets in the backfield than on the line, and has exhibited plenty of running power in previous games. Tradition At Stake When the two clubs square off for the championship battle Friday, Fri-day, there will be much more at stake than just the game itself. Springville teams, traditionally, would rather beat the Payson eleven than any other club in the district. This "defeat Payson above all others" is a carry-over from way back. In eleven years Springville Spring-ville clubs have bowed to the Pay-son Pay-son teams only three times. This is an outstanding record and is something for this year's team to shoot at. The results since 1935 show : 1935 Springville 14, Payson 12. 1936 Springville 6, Payson 6. 1937 Springville 19, Payson 7- 1938 Springville 13, Payson 8. ' 1939 Springville 6, Payson 26. 1940 Springville 7, Payson 0. 1941 Springville 19, Payson 19. 1942 Springville 18, Payson 7. 19-13 Springville 7, Payson 47. 194-1 Springville 0, Payson 25. 1945 Springville 14, Payson 0. 1946 Springville ?, Payson ?. Devils Improve Coach George Pehrson and Assistant As-sistant Coach Art Hughes have brought the Springville club a long way thus far in the season. The locals, in winning all their league games to date, have showed much improvement both in offensive play as well as defensive. In Black, Norton, Eggertsen and Miner, the Devil club has an outstanding backfield. Hunter, who is particularly particu-larly good defensively; Scouten, Bramall, Sundblom, Bird, Groes-beck, Groes-beck, Haws and Clegg make up a fast-charging line, although somewhat some-what smaller than the backfield men in weight and size. Plenty of enthusiasm and eagerness to defeat de-feat the Lions may be enough, along with their ability, to chalk up a Nebo division championship Friday. Tlayoff Scheduled The Springville - Payson winner will meet the runner-up team of Alpine, Lehi, on November 1, as will the loser of the same game meet the Alpine winner, Lincoln, on the same date. The winner of this game will then meet Nov. 8 for the Region Three championship and the winner of that game will go into the state semifinals. Place of the games to be played will be announced later. |
