EXPERT GIVES TIPS ON CARE OF CHICKENS Overcrowding in the laying house is one common cause that may contribute toward the habit of cannibalism or feather picking among laying flocks, Dr. Lawrence Law-rence Morris, Utah State Extension Exten-sion poultryman, warned today. To remedy this hens should be allowed about three and a half feet of floor space per bird, which means about 125 hens in a 20x20 house, Dr. Morris said. Improper feeding rations are another cause of cannibalism. The ration should be balanced with the proper amounts of poteins, vitamins, vita-mins, and minerals. A good laying lay-ing mash should be fed at all times and, where necessary, supplemented sup-plemented with grains, the extension exten-sion poultryman added. When feather picking develops, the following remedies may be tried: Give -the birds more room, either by turning them outdoors or by additional house space. Place some good quality alfalfa al-falfa hay where the hens may pick the leaves and fine stems. If good quality whole dry oats are available, put oats before them in separate feeders at all times. Add ordinary table salt to the drinking water. One tablespoonful per gallon. Give this water two |
