Show M WW IIS He iw far lrii? II This year will be a busy one and from present indications a happy one for Utah citizens so far as entertainment is concerned, con-cerned, as this state will observe ob-serve the 100th aniversary of its settlement. Planned for 1947, in various cities throughout the state, are pageants, parades, musical festivals, fes-tivals, dramas, operas and many other programs to mark the centennial year. Springville's major contribution contribu-tion to the centennial entertainment entertain-ment will be the high school art exhibit in April. A bigger and better exhibit is planned this year because of the centennial, and thousands of visitors from this state and from all parts of . the country will come to Springville Spring-ville during the art month. Other entertainment features here throughout the year will emphasize the centennial theme. This new year will be a time , for Utahns to look back over the years to note the progress made by the state since the first hardy pioneers made the long trek into this unknown land. This new year will be a time to look forward to see what the next century holds in store for this state and its people. This year will be a year to remember. remem-ber. Predictions through the nation na-tion on what 1947 will bring are controversal. The outlook in fields other than business is hazy because it depends on the economic future of the nation, according to one authority. Some economists report that a depression in 1947 is possible, but neither a certainty nor a necessity. The year can be a boom year of unprecedented proportions if labor strife can be averted so as to keep industry indus-try in full production, and if prices can be kept in a range where people can buy, it is reported. re-ported. The labor picture for 1947 in the nation has been described as uncertain, emotional and explosive ex-plosive with labor and management manage-ment squaring of after their stormiest year in history. This year, farmers again are being asked to produce abund antly to meet continued world shortages, but according to a national survey, 1947 may be the last year for some time that such planting will be favored. fav-ored. There are indications that after this year the demand for American food may drop off sharply, national reports state. Farm income and farm prices which reached a peak in 1946, are expected to ease off during this year, reports state. The national picture for 1947 so far as foreign affairs are concerned, portrays a "peace conference" over Germany similar simi-lar to the 1946 Paris conference confer-ence with similar results as Russia continues delaying tactics tac-tics against removal of Soviet troops from central Europe. So far as politics is concerned, con-cerned, 1947 will find the Republicans Re-publicans facing dificulties in bringing about the economy, tax reductions and continued abolition aboli-tion of wartime controls on which they hope to build a 1947 record to bolster the following year's presidential campaign. A scientific prospect for the year 1947 is the generation of atomic heat from uranium to run electric generators. In 1946 atomic energy piles were able to boil water, and the set-up to make steam is expected this year. Also learning more about the space around the earth is another scientific prospect of the year. In aviation it is expected that private flying will be 10 times greater in 1947 than before the war. Air lines will have more than four times the planes as during the war, and officials point out that one problem will be to keep them busy. Less feminism and more feminity fem-inity are the prospects for women wom-en in 1947. The nation's housewives house-wives having taken inflation control in their own hands, have convinced business and industry that they can refuse to pay ex- . orbitant prices, and they will be expected to continue this policy through 1947, according to a national report. As to fashions, women who have clung to the slim silhouette silhou-ette and tailored line for five years, now yearn for glamor, and as a result the new year will see longer, fuller skirts, more feminine lines, greater elegance and a softer silhouette. In sports another banner year is predicted. The St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox plan to get together again after pennant fights, with the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees, respectively, say sports officials. In regard to movies, a report states that they cost 82 percent more to make today than they did five years ago. Income from theaters is up, but if bad times come, and people have less money, the business will suffer. suf-fer. However, believing that prosperity will continue through the year, picture producers are going ahead with plans for more costly pictures. With the many predictions on business and pleasure for the year, 1947 has prospects for an exciting period and one to which we may well look forward. |
