May 31, 1943 "I wish I knew how to express my sincere appreciatiorj and gratitude grati-tude to you for sending The Herald Her-ald to me every week- I read it and re-read it to make sure I haven't missed anything. This is really the only way we people so far away can keep up on the home town dope. "At present I am stationed at Lynchburg, Virginia. (About 100 miles from Richmond.) Here we are taking over the Recruiting of the Air Cadets and men over 38 as well as the WAACs. The soldiers sol-diers who were formerly on duty here have departed for active service ser-vice somewhere in the field, so you see we really are replacing men. Thanking you again for your thoughtfulness, I remain, Sincerely yours, Cpl. Merle Fletcher. Among service men home the past week on furloughs to visit relatives and friends were 'Glen Gottfredson of the Navy and Rex Johnson from the Army. Rex is recovering from a recent accident. From England comes the following fol-lowing V-mail letter: "Wish to express my appreciation apprecia-tion for sending the Herald to me. Even if itvis about a month old, I get a great kick out of it This is a great country if you like it, but I'll take the U. S., where they don't take time out twice a day for tea, where a door knob is called a door knob and not "rim furniture," where a truck's a truck, and not a "lorry," and gasoline gas-oline is gas and not "petrol." "Not a lot to say except that I hope to soon move and get on that boat and go on a straight line home instead of zig-zag. "Have seen one or two small raids but nothing worth being alarmed about. "London is quite a place, but haven't been there for about four months. Hope to get a day off and go there soon. Sincerely, Lt Lowell M. Crandall. Oral M. Franson, 469 N.
