"The shepherd should make a daily practice of judging his sheep-and sheep-and analyzing their important features," the specialist remarks. However, to maintain consistent judging and selection, a system is required and defects and disqualifications disqual-ifications must be understood, he adds. Common faults in judging sheep according to Professor Keetch, are inadequate observations and excessive handling. He suggests handling sheep only to verify observations ob-servations made from a distance. He also advises against the opening open-ing of fleece on the back. Included in the sheep-judging fact sheet are lists of useful descriptive des-criptive terms; a general score card for mutton breeds, wooled breeds and fat lambs; and a summary sum-mary chart of the characteristics of the most popular sheep breeds in Utah. |
