Show IVeetllecraft Newsc-- (- foy Naiuyi&axter From the poetry of Keats comes a line that reads, "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever." How well this sentiment applies to fine crochet! Lovely filet work, Irish crochet and pineapple patterns pat-terns were admired by our grandmothers and great-grandmothers in their day. Itese crochet favorites, having endured the test of time, are loved today as well for their richness of design. "It's beauty increases," wrote Keats. STARCHED TO PERFECTION The beauty of delicate deli-cate crochet work is further enhanced by a crisp finish. Doilies, especially, require starching to accentuate properly each tiny stitch. A good', heavy starch solution can be made by first dissolving dissolv-ing Yz cup of starch in V cup of eold water. Heat another 1 cups of water in a pot until boiling and remove from the flame. Stir in the starch mixture, reheat re-heat the entire solution until it thickens, stirring constantly. Let this cool until comfortable to the touch. Dip and squeeze your crocheted article in the starch until well saturated. Do only one article at a time. Gently wring out the excess moisture and shake out enough to clear the starch from the openings. Leave to dry while pinned to a padded board or shaped over a frame. Ruffles may be pressed with a steam iron when dry or with a regular iron when slightly damp'After pressing, pin each fold of the ruffle in place and let stand until the entire piece is dry. For a light starch solution, follow the same procedure using 2 to 3 quarts of boiling water. PICK OF THE PINEAPPLES A time-honored design, the ruffled pineapple doily, adds its graceful appearance to contemporary homes. This new version of an old favorite is heirloom-like in quality but fresh in mood. Th pretty pineapples are worked in the center around which are lacy meshes and a fluffy ruffle, all done in white crochet cotton. You may obtain the directions for making THE PINEAPPLE DOILY by writing to the Needlework Department of this paper.
