Show labor, Business Conditions in County Discussed "iNSURED EMPLOYMENT in Utah County suffered a 22 diop in July as compared with the June 1 1956 experience according to a re port by Jennings M. Lee Manager, Mana-ger, Utah county Employment Security office, who gives other business information as follows. The loss amounted to 3,840 covered cov-ered jobs. Some of the jobs were vacated by workers involved m a labor dispute, others disintegrated as a result of the labor dwpute. TOTAL EMPLOYMENT in Utah County-as of this date is 29,235. This figure includes about l.ouu workers on a part-time work basis. A NORMAL ECONOMY could have resulted in a three per cent work force (33,845) increase from last month. UNEMPLOYMENT in the county coun-ty by mid-July had reached about 3,950. This figure is being held down by the area's agricultural harvest. If the present labor dispute dis-pute continues beyond the berry and sour cherry harvest, unemployment unem-ployment will increase once again. INSURED UNEMPLOYMENT, while moderate now, will climb as .raifino- npriod reauirements are being met and more displaced workers wor-kers are applying for unemploy: ment benefits. Local Business THE WEIGHTED over-all sales change for June 1956 compared to June 1955 showed a plus 7.3 per cent. Leading the way was BUILDING MATERIAL SALES at 26.5. THE EATING AND DRINKING BUSINESS did well at 7.5 and DAIRY PRODUCT SALES showed a healthy 5.0 increase. in-crease. AUTOMOTIVE SALES were also on the plus side with a 3.6 increase from last year. POSTAL RECEIPTS are 13.3 above June 1955. Building permits numbered 192 for June with a dollar value of $1,359,740. Compared Com-pared to June 1955, this year's building permit experience is off 1.4 per cent. The June BUILDING PERMIT experience however, points to an active fall building business. Outlook It appears that the LOCAL ECONOMY IS GATHERING STRENGTH in expectation of strong fall business activity, once the steel strike is settled. THE BUILDING INDUSTRY In Utah County, doing well at present, should do better at the conclusion of the present labor dispute. |
