Show Sea Levels Change Although most people do not realize it, the northern oceans actually ac-tually rise and fall, according to the seasons, and reach a high point in late fall or early winter. Offsetting the rise in the northern north-ern oceans, a fall is traceable in the southern oceans, reaching a low point at about the same time the northern oceans reach a high one. The amount of rise, from lowest low-est to highest, is about eight inches. inch-es. Dr. June G. Petullo, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Oceanogra-phy, has recently reported on intensive in-tensive research into this phase of ocean activity. Until the Petullo report, verification of the rise and fall of the oceans was lacking and practically nothing was known about the variations in level of the seas except the normal tide changes. |
