Show Sprlngvie Unit Of CAP Gets High Merit Award The story of a youth's determination determin-ation to be a flyer came to light this week when Verg R. Collings of the Springville Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol brought to the Springville Herald office, a picture of a squadron member, who has been hitch-hiking to the Springville cadet meetings each Wednesday evening, from his home in Goshen, a distance of 52 miles and last week was presented with the Meritorious Service Award by the National Headquarters of the CAP. Known to his friends as Cadet Ca-det 2nd Lt. Richard Carter, the young man received the award at a ' dinner meeting at Chicken Roost. When Cadet Carter was 12, he clipped from the Air Trails magazine, mag-azine, an article concerning the enlistment en-listment in the CAP. This he kept until he was 15, and then sent it to the National Headquarters .in Washington, D. C. They in turn sent his name to the Utah Wing which enrolled him. Since that time, Lt. Carter has seldom missed a meeting and often he doesn't reach home until nearly morning after hitch-hiking back. He is the adjutant of the Cadet Squadron of Springville and officers are proud of his record believing that some day he will make a. fine pilot for his country. Lt. , Carter likes to build model planes and has several flying. He was unable to attend the summer encampment in 1952, but attended this training at Hill Field AFB in 1953, where the boys learn the fun-dementals fun-dementals of military life and take orientation rides in AF ships. |
