Show Quote on Water Flouridation . . . Editor's note The following item is quoted by a Springville Herald reader from the Consumers Con-sumers Research Bulletin of February. The Consumers Research Re-search is a non-profit institution, institu-tion, organized and operated as a scientific, technical and educational edu-cational service for consumers. It has no connections with business bus-iness or advertising; its support sup-port comes solely from the consumers con-sumers who read Consumers Research Bulletins. It is said to be the magazine that guides consumer buying. The item quoted from the Consumers Guide follows: "Fluoridated dentrifrices may be exempted from the prescription-dispensing requirements of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. It is proposed that sodium monofluorophos-phate monofluorophos-phate be used in liquid dentifrice denti-frice preparations containing not more than 60 milligrams per milliliter and packaged to contain not more than 3.6 grams of sodium monofluoro-phosphate monofluoro-phosphate per retail package. Such preparations must be labeled la-beled with adequate directions for use by adults and children six years and over, and must include instructions to rinse the mouth thoroughly after brushing. In addition, there must be a clear warning statement state-ment against use by children under six years of age. Tooth pastes containing fluorine are currently available and no doubt liquid dentifrices containing contain-ing fluorine will appear shortly. short-ly. Those who believe that application ap-plication of fluorides may be effective in warding off dental caries have a choice of techniques tech-niques of application and should perhaps be encouraged to make their own decisions of what to use in individual cases instead of burdening the taxpayers with the expense of fluoridating city and municipal water supplies for everybody, including those who do not want the medication medica-tion and the many adults to whom it can have no possible value." |
