Show Many Local People Enjoy Fourth of July Celebration Springville firemen staged a successful entertainment for old and young here, July Fourth. While many local people attended the parade and other features of the Spanish Fork celebration, the children of this city, who were unable to leave town, were furnished fur-nished plenty of amusements. A number of races and other contests were conducted at the city park for children during the forenoon, but the major contests were conducted in the afternoon. A greased pole climbing was an entertaining part of the program, enjoyed by both onlookers and participants. Prizes were given those who reached the top. A greased pig contest in which a large group of boys joined, also attracted an interested crowd. Creed Diamond was declared the "pig catcher," bMt immediately sold his nrize catch to Harvey Hutchinson. Other amusing contests con-tests included head diving for coins, races for all ages, and ball games, with prizes for winners in all events. Miniature Parade Much favorable comment was given the miniature parade conducted con-ducted by the city recreational groups, under the direction of Mrs. Eugene Palfreyman, and Dona Snell, assisted by W'ilford Mower and Monty Grocsbeck. Prizes for the most outstanding floats, most of which were made by the children, chil-dren, were given by the firemen. The Daughters of the Revolution Revolu-tion float, was entered by Dorothy Cranmer and Elaine Jones; Goddess God-dess of Liberty. Betty Rae Roberts; Rob-erts; The Dolls Queen, Arleno Snell and Viola Gene Miner; Columbia, Co-lumbia, a neighborhood float, by Clinton, Marjorie and Carol Anderson, An-derson, Max Johnson, Joe Alexander, Alex-ander, June, Robert and Jim Thorn; the Fire Queen, by LaRee and Geneil Bird; Billy Goat, Joe Cranmer and Jackie Parker; Pink and Blue, by Peggy Crandall and Tommy Schwartz. Tn addition to the floats, a number num-ber of prettily decorated doll buggies bug-gies were entered. Mi'fan Board-all's Board-all's Shetland pony and English bulldog, attracted the attention of j all. Each state as well as the 13 original colonies were represented. : Adding much to the parade was ). the junior high school band in costume. In the evening at the ball park, a large crowd was entertained t with a concert by the high school j band, .and two special exhibition j Softball games. The recently pur- j chased loud speaker added much ; tp the spirit of the occasion, both at the ball games during the eve- : ning and during the children's entertainment at the city park, in the afternoon. The ball games between the Mission cafe and Eddington Can- ners and Jack's Service and Maple- j- ton, resulted in victories for F.d- J dinglon Canners and Jack's Serv- j ice. In behalf of the recreational groups, appreciation is expressed to parents and children Tor the splendid cooperation manifested in the celebration. The firemen also express appreciation appre-ciation to city officials who contributed con-tributed funds for the entertainment entertain-ment as well as to all others who helped make the day a success. |
