Show Honolulu Mob Threatens Residence Of Governor Discontent Stirred Up Over Freeing" of American "Honor' Slayers. HONOLULU, T. H., May 5 (U.l!) Military police guarded Governor Lawrence M. Judd today in Iolani palace, ancient home of Hawaiian monarchs, where threatening messages mes-sages were received after he freed the four American honor slayers by commuting their 10-year prison sentences to one hour. Widespread dissatisfaction among both whites ana natives over Judd's sudden action again menaced men-aced the peace he had sought to restore to Honolulu. Native elements, led by Princess Abigal Kawanananakou, denounced denounc-ed the commutations as a "farce" while navy circles and other whita residents were openly bitter because be-cause the governor did not accede to popular demand for full pardons. par-dons. The commutation was as unexpected unex-pected as the verdict of a mixed jury last Friday which convicted Mrs. Granville Fortescue, her son-in-law, Lieut. (JG) Thomas H. Massie, and two navy enlisted men, A. O. Jones and E. J. Lord, on manslaughter charges in the slaying slay-ing of Joe Kahahawai, half-caste street car conductor. |
