Show No Fight Is Ever Won By Looking Backward! One of the ideas for a solution of our troubles is that we should all ko back "to the simple life of our grandfathers." Acres of highly-Blazed paper in highbrow magazines are covered with glowing accounts of the happy, hearty, contented con-tented lives of the noble souls of 1832. Careful inquiry, however, fails to disclose one of the authors of these enchanting pieces actually taking his own advice. They seem to prefer modern plumbing, a good car, central heating and paved highways out into their much-admired much-admired backwoods. Of the life they write about so glowingly, they really vision about as much as the average movie fan visions of Marlenc Dietrich's arms. Now, of course, we are not going back to any such miserable miser-able sort of existence as was common a century ago. Those who advocate such a course really say to people: "We have in the world an abundance of necessities and comforts, but under our present system, these are denied to millions of you. Therefore., the best thing to do is forget them and return to the semi-barbarism of your forefathers." That is a defeatist sort of idea, and we disagree with it. We don't believe in going backward to anywhere; we believe be-lieve in going forward. ' If a system denies millions the right to life and comfort and a full use of scientific achievement, then it is time to fight to adjust the system, so that it will. It can be done. |
