Show TREE SURGERY IS APPLIED TO PIONEER RELIC The old cottonwood tree, pioneer landmark on North Main street, has undergone a complete renovation renova-tion under the direction of H. C. Heady, Salt Lake tree specialist and landscape gardener, i Modern methods of tree -surgery have changed the appearance of the old relic from an uncared for specimen to a tree of finest proportions. pro-portions. Branches which heretofore hereto-fore have known only nature's pruners, have been trimmed down while others have been grafted in sparse places on the tree. A concrete filling has practically effaced the destructive force of fire which years ago, burned a hole completely through its massive trunk. All decayed portions and other scars on the tree have been given scientific treatment. Efforts to save the tree began several months ago under the direction di-rection of Mrs. Mary J. Finley and a committee from the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, when other trees were removed from Main street to make way for the pavement project. pro-ject. The significance of this lone cottonwood, cot-tonwood, as a pioneer landmark, was revealed when Governor G. H. Dern, Dr. George R. Hill, Professor Walter Cottam of Salt Lake and many former citizens from all parts of the state, communicated with city chairman and city officials, urging preservation of the tree. |
