Hobble Creek, Diamond Fork unit rides scheduled this weekend The annual deer range rides for the Diamond Fork and Hob-ble Creek units will be made this week, according to Span-ish Fork Ranger Reed C. Chris-tense- The group will meet Satur-day morning, March 30, at the mouth of Sheep Creek in Span-ish Fork Canyon at 9 a.m. This ride will be over the Tank Hollow- -Knoll Hollow area. Reha-bilitation work has been started this year on these critical wa tershed and winter range lands and the results will be inspec-ted as part of the ride. On Sunday, April 1, they will meet on the road just south of the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon again at 9 a.m. This ride will be made in the Maple Canyon-Fro- nt Mountain area. Representatives of the Forest Service and the Utah State Fish and Game departments will be on the rides both days. The Western Boys Baseball Assoc. of Springville which comprises four leagues, Sage Creek, Hobble Creek, Mill Creek and Spring Creek will hold try-ou- ts on April 6 on their respective ball diamonds. The try-ou- ts will begin at 9 a.m. through 11 a.m. for the two youngest age groups, the 9 and 10 year olds. The 11 and 12 year olds will try out from 11:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. These try-ou- ts will include all new and other boys not on a team including the Independent League players. The Independ-ent League will be reorganized again this year and the Brook-sid- e School diamond will be improved to provide a suitable playing area. Each player trying out must bring his birth certificate. Lea-gue officers must have proof of the players age before plac-ing him on a team. The $5.50 player fee should be paid as soon as possible. All boys now on a team should contact their manager or league president and submit theplayer fee. George Pehrson, recreation director, announces that he will conduct an umpire school for all Springville and Mapleton WBBA leagues before the sea-son play begins. President Bud Schardine announced that if weather is inclement on April 6, the sameschedule will be ap-plied the following Saturday. Shoemaker, Jr., has been designated Army Dep-uty Chief of Information by Secretary of the Army Cyrus R. Vance. He has been nomi-nated for promotion to the rank of brigadier general, and succeeds Brig. Gen. G. V. Un-derwood, Jr., who is now Army Chief of Information and Chief of Public Information. Prior to his assignment as Commanding Officer, U.S. Army Troop Information Support Unit, from Feb. 1961 to Feb. 1963, Colonel Shoemaker re-ceived, through the Chief of In-formation Senior Officer Civil Schooling Program, an MA in Communications and Journal-ism from Stanford University, 1960. Colonel Shoemaker was grad-uated from the United States Military Academy, class of 1940, and commissioned a 2d Lt. in the Field Artillery.
