Department biologists aided by veterenarians from the Utah and United States Departments De-partments of Agriculture tackled the knotty problem of finding, tranquilizing and inoculating inoc-ulating the 1962 buffalo calf crop with excellent success. The operation, carried on in the rugged, broken desert-mountain desert-mountain terrain south of Hanksville relied on a combination combi-nation of skillful helicopter handling and deadeyed accuracy accur-acy with a capture gun. Shooting tranquilizer laden darts at close quarters from a low flying helicopter veterin-rians veterin-rians and biologists subdued 12 of an estimated 16 animals comprising the 1962 buffalo calf crop. . Once tranquilized, Brucellosis Brucello-sis inoculations, ear tags, white ear tags for identification identifica-tion were administered to the animals. Veterinarians were then left with each animal, to comhat any unforseen complications com-plications that might arise until un-til the animal had recovered from the drug and regained his feet. With initial efforts to control con-trol the .disease successful plans are going ahead for further inoculation and testing test-ing work in this remnant buffalo herd. |
