Surgery is performed earlier to prevent the development of the large superficial veins. The earlier the patient sees the physician, the better are the chances for avoiding extensive procedures later, and the better bet-ter is the cosmetic result. Even in the extensive surgical sur-gical cases, the cosmetic results re-sults are good. The scars are usually hairline and not easily visible except under close scrutiny. scru-tiny. The best result of these procedures, however, is the relative re-lative freedom from pain. j As long as man persists in walking upright (which it is hoped he will continue to do) he will be afflicted with this circulatory disturbance. He can help himself, however, by consulting con-sulting his physician at the earliest possible moment, when the symptoms of pain in the legs occur. Varicose veins cause pain, doctors report The following is one , of a series of articles furnished by the Utah State Medical Association Asso-ciation in cooperation with this newspaper. When varicose veins occur, the result is usually a picture of swollen legs with the veins knotted and .corded. Caused by inadequate circulation circu-lation to the legs over a long period of years, they are usually us-ually seen in overweight, mid-dleaged mid-dleaged women who have borne many children. Varicos veins begin much earlier than the period when they first become visible on the surface and characterize an inadequacy of the valves in the veins of the legs, thus the blood "pools" or piles up in the legs. Since this blood is not carried to the heart and lungs for oxygenation it stagr nates. The tissues of the legs become undernourished and pain is the result. The venous blood remaining in the supeh-ficial supeh-ficial veins form large, blue corded channels which are apparent ap-parent on the surface of the legs. Standing, of course, increases in-creases the pooling and the pain. Varicose veins occur most frequently in individuals who are on their feet a great deal. Pregnant women develop these vins bcause of back pressure from the weight of the infants they carry in their abdomens. Individuals who wear garters gar-ters develop these veins because be-cause of back pressure on the lower limbs.
