Lack of Previous Experience Responsible for Rather Mediocre Showing Displayed by Saints ; This Season; Sophomores anil Juniors j Win Most of First-string Positions. A I LTHOUGH ' the "Later Day Saints' basketball quint did not show up ca well this year as in past seasons, sea-sons, Coach G. A. Rynearson has the makings of a team which will no doubt, be heard from within the next two years. Ryne.-irson lost every first-t first-t string man he had on last year';; first team throup.h either sickness or graduation, gradua-tion, and as a '-result, it was hardly to be expected 1 hat the Gold and Blue ten m couid rn nke a bid for the state title this year, having only inexperienced mcnto rely upon. However, the Saints have put up some dandy, battles with the other tearns in '.he Salt Lake division, and the teams which have beaten thorn have been f tread to piny their best brand of ba.Il to do co.' An example of this can ne given in the recent Hi ngh:i m - L. D. S. U. game, whon the Miners went into ths fray thinking that it would, no doubt, be a cinch. As a matter of fact, Die final core would indicate in-dicate just that, but it is true, nevertheless, never-theless, that during the fir.-t period the league leaders only managed to gain a six-point lead over Rynea rson's charges. Alex Nielson. Bird Jex and Leroy Zanders Zan-ders havn been the most consisterr. performers per-formers lt;r the Saints so far thiu year. They were the ones who could nsunliy be counted on to do the scoring, ana th?y have always been ou the alert to preveni their opponents from doing likewise. Jess McCune. playing, as a rult. tho po:uiton ot stationary gun rd, ha s been instrument a 1 in upsetting the chances of many of the other teams for what looked 1 ik? almost certain scores. Gloyd Cowley, although getting Into thti Imy only occasionally, lias shown that wirh more Ixperiencq he will ba able to hold down one "f the regular regu-lar forward positions, and hold it down well. |
