Show JAPANESE STILL MAKING EFFORT FOR AMENDMENT PARIS. Wednesday, March 23. The Japanese delegation to the peace conference confer-ence continued to press today for an amendment to the covenant of the league favoring the principle -of equalitv of the races. The original Japanese proposal which met with a speedy rejection has been modified by them several times until, un-til, as it stood today, it calls for "recognition "recog-nition of the eauality of nations and just treatment of all their nationals." It was generally understood that several of the leading delegations, including the American Ameri-can mission, were inclined to believe there was nothing objectionable in an amendment thus framed. Tho Australians, Australi-ans, however, were understood to have declined their assent that the covenant I should go even thus far. |
