Show SLANDEROUS LETTERS START U. S. PROBE Attention of federal officers was called yesterday to the fact that unscrupulous persons recently have written to drafted men at Camp Lewis and other cantonments canton-ments giving purported information to the effect that the wives whom they left behind are conducting themselves in an immoral manner during the absence of their husbands. In one instance a young woman tearfully tear-fully appealed for assistance lit contradicting contra-dicting the allegation, and she proved to the satisfaction of officers that not only had she supported herself by cleaning cars at the Oregon Short Line station, but had provided for the rnother of her soldier husband for several months. She said she had demanded that the letters attacking her character be sent to her, but t ha t her husband had Ignored the demand and had threatened to withdraw her allotment. The matter is being investigated by the proper branch of the government service, and If " the statements of the wife are substantiated a discontinuance of the allotment al-lotment will not be permitted. There Is a provision In one of the recently re-cently enacted regulations making it a serious offense to write letters to soldiers containing derogatory reference to their wives, and if the persons responsible for the unhapptness of the women who have made the complaints can be located they will bo severely punished. |
