The Carpathia was owned by the Cunard line. Prior to the war she was engaged in transatlantic service. - It was the Carpathia which answered the wireless S. O. S. call of the liner Titanic in April, 1912, when that vessel sank on her maiden voyage to New York with heavy loss ,of life. The Carpathia picked up and landed at New York S66 j survivors of the Titanic. The torpedoes were fired at the Car- ; pathla and all hit the vessel. Splendid 1 discipline was maintained. The survivors' were in the water two hours, the Exchange Ex-change Telegraph company says, when picked up by the steamer which brought them into port. The Carpathia disappeared dis-appeared very quickly. Five persons were killed on the Cunard liner through a torpedo entering the engine en-gine room. They include thirty-six saloon passengers and twenty-one from the steerage. The survivors sur-vivors number 213. Survivors say the vessel was sunk by a submarine at 9:15 "Wednesday morning. All were saved except three firemen and two trimmers, supposed to have been killed by the explosion. Members of the crew say a torpedo struck slightly forward of the engine room and a minute or two later a sec- ond torpedo crashed into the engine room, j There was no panic. For a time it appeared the Carpathia i might remain afloat, but the U-boat came to the surface and fired a third torpedo. The liner filled rapidly and sank about two hours after being struck. After her disappearance the submarine approached the Carpathia's boats, but did not fire on them. |
