Show REFORMATORY IS S1.000JOCO FIRE Five Buildings of Indiana Institution Demolished by Blaze. JEFFERSONVILLE. Ind., Feb. 6". Five of the thirteen buildings of the Indiana state reformatory were destroyed by fire here early today, entailing an estimated loss of $1,000,000. Twelve hundred and eighty-five prisoners, in cell houses and dormitories, were marshaled In orderly array and marched to the insti tut ional school building:, 200 yards away from the fire. None tried to escape. The blaze wus discovered shortly after midnight in the trade school building, and is believed to have been due to crossed electric wires. Within a few minutes the fire was beyond the control of the department at t lie reformatory, and JefferHOiniile and Louisville sent apparatus. ap-paratus. Low water pressure handicapped handi-capped the efforts of the firemen, and before the fire was brought under control con-trol the tradf school huiMincr, one dormitory, dor-mitory, a cell house, a foundry, warehouse- and the administration building had heen destroyed. With the destruction of the dinlns room, kitchen and food supplies, the prison authorities today faced the problem prob-lem of feeding the prisoners. PaUin fiims, bakeries and other like institutions institu-tions in Louisville were communicated with before the fire had been gotten under un-der con trol and supplies wore ordered. Colonel V. H. Hart, U. S. A., solved the problem by lending army field kitchens. Fifty-four sailors from Die American fleet, in Louisville on furlough, performed valuable service during the fire. |
