Show SECRETARY THURMAN TELLS OTTRIP EAST Special to The Tribune. PROVO, March 6. Secretary Arch M. Thurman of the Provo Commercial club, gave an interesting report of his recent trip to Chicago at the luncheon today at the Hotel Roberts. Mr. Thurman went to Chicago to at tend tlie convention of the National Leiense and the National Service leagues Among those at the congress were former President William H. Taf t. three former nominees for the president. Secretary of State Robert Lansing. Secretary of War Newton P. Baker and Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Iane. nineteen governors and about iittC'O other prominent men from ail parts of the country. The main subjects considered were food conservation and increased production. produc-tion. Mr. Thurman stated that 4S per cent of the farm products of the United States is for livestock consumption, and that It may become necessary to reduce the animal production in order to increase in-crease the amount of grain available for human consumption for the people of the United States and their allies. Favorable Favor-able mention was made of Utah as being first in increased acreage and production in 1917. Secretarv Baker was emphatic in his statement that an early peace cannot be looked for, and that it is better to fight now than ten years hence. Greater f.nancial sacrifices than have so far been made will have to be made, in the opinion opin-ion of Mr. Thurman, based on tlie Information Infor-mation gained at the congress. |
