Jellicoe from the i post of first eea lord last December was i ) the subject of attacks on Sir Eric Geddes, i first lord of the admiralty, in the house of j commons this afternoon, j Sir Edward Carson, the former first lord of the admiralty, termed it a national j calamity. He asserted that the war cabi- j net, of which he was at that time a member, was not responsible, and said ' that naval officers protested against it, : Admiral Sir Hedworth Meux declared I that Sir Eric Geddes had flouted the ' whole fleet. j Andrew Bonar Law, spokesman for the : government, explained how Premier Uoyd George had summoned him to the J cabinet room. Geddes was there and said ! he had come to the conclusion that In the public interest there should he this ! change. ;' Sir Edward Carson, interrupting Mr. Bonar Law, interjected: , "If I had continued to be first lord I , i would certainly have resisted the removal i of Admiral Jellicoe." Mr. Bonar Law, resuming, said: i "Sir Eric told me at the same time i that the subject had not been mentioned to him for two months by the premier, i and that he had come to the conclusion absolutely on his own initiative." l The first lord here interposed and said - he thought that if the advice he gave i was accepted by the premier it became : the decision of the governmant He would like to say that from the day he ae- cepted office until Admiral Jellicoe left , - i the admiralty, no suggestion had been , made and no pressure had been put upon him to make any change at the ad-: ad-: : miralty. |
