Show BURGOMASTER OF BRUSSELS CHEERED ON RETURN HOME BRUSSELS. Nov. 19. Adolph U. Max, the burgomaster of Brussels, returned from captivity today and was given an enthusiastic ovation by the populace. Burgomaster Max was arrested while performing his duties in Brussels late in September, 1914, after dissensions with the German governor general. A'on der Goltz. He was taken to Germany and refused offers of the Gorman government to be returned to Belgium if lie would change his attitude towatd the Germans. In August, H7, King Alfonso of Spain made a fruitless attempt to obtain the release of Burgonrasler Max. He "was liberated by the Germans several days ago in accordance with the armistice agreement. |
