Show DECLARES WILSON IS ESSENTIAL AT PEACE CONGRESS NEW YORK, Nov. ID. The presence of President Wilson in Europe is "ab-; solutely essential, '' declared Sir Charles ! Ross, one of the largest landowners of the United Kingdom and inventor of the Canadian service rifle, on his arrival ar-rival today on the British steamship Orduna. He said ho had come to the United States on a special mission, but declined to say what it was. "The people of Great Britain and of the United States," he added, "do not fully understand each other, but both desire to reach a better basis of mutual understanding. v A visit to Europe Eu-rope by President Wilson at tho present pres-ent time will have a wonderful effect on future relations." Fellow passengers of Sir Charles were General S. R. Rolt, a member of the British general staff, who has been with the American armies in Europe, also on a " special mission, " and a number of homewardbound Australian soldierB who were among the first ' ' thirty thousands" thou-sands" in Australia to volunteer. Of these 30,000 volunteers only 7000 were left alive, they said. The Orduna is one of the few passenger passen-ger steamers that have run continuously throughout the war, although several times attacked by U-boats. |
