Show Miscellany Main Events in the Life of John J. Pershing. Born in Linn county, Missouri, September Septem-ber 30, 1S60. Graduated with degree of B. A. from Ktrkville Normal school at 20. Entered West Point in 1SS2, and on graduation, in 1SS6, was assigned to Sixth cavalry, on duty in Apache Indian country. Commanded Sioux scouts, under General Gen-eral Miles, in the DnUutas in 1SSS. Made instructor of military science, University of Nebraska, 1 SS:i, and later instructor at West Point, from which post lie left to .loin Shatter in Cuba. "Went to Manila in ISO!!, where, as adjutant ad-jutant general on the staff of General Bates, he organized and successfully con- ducted the first American expedition into the Sulu archipelago. Subdued the Moros and governed them as chief staff officer for General Bates from to lt'il3. Called home by President Roosevelt in 1903 to accept post on general staff on its initial organization. Married Mi-ss Frances H. Warren, daughter of Senator Francis E. Warren of W yoming, in 1905. Served as American attache in Japan and with Kuroki's army in Manchuria during Russo-Japanese war. Prompted to be brigadier general over heads of S62 officers who were his seniors in rank, 1906- Returned to Mindanao as governor of Sulu Islands and commanding general, department of Mindanao and Jolo, 1906. Sent to Mexico to round up bandits in March, 191i. and named to succeed General Gen-eral Funston. on the letter's death, as' commander of the southern department.
