Show ONE MAN IN CHARGE OF ALCOHOL SALES Dan B. Shields, Attorney Gneral, Hands Down Opinion Concerning Warehouseman Ware-houseman Feature of Prohibition. Dan B. Shields, attorney general, decided de-cided yesterday that Oscar Lehman of this city, appointed by Governor Simon Bamberger recently to act as warehouse manager under the prohibition law, is the only man to act in that capacity during the early period of operation of the "bone dry" statute. As need mav arise other warehouse managers may be appointed by the governor gov-ernor to put into effect the provisions of the law intended to control the fcalo of alcohol in the state.' For some time after August 1, however, Mr. Lehman will be the only appointee named to act in this capacity. The clause in the law relating to warehouse managers was changed in the wording by the senate committee. Wholesale druggists represented to members mem-bers of the committee that if they were not permitted to buy alcohol direct from the manufacturers it would seriously serious-ly interfere with their legitimate business. busi-ness. Frequently, they oointed out, alcohol al-cohol was used as a solvent by druggists. drug-gists. The legislators, however, made the law read that druggists must mako their purchases of alcohol from the warehouse ware-house manager named by the governor. It is on this account that the attorney attor-ney general has ruled that during the early period of operation of the prohibition prohi-bition law at least Mr. Lehman shall bo the only warehouseman to act. |
