RAILROAD IS OPPOSED Property Owners Protest Against Proposed Freight Tracks on Street. Reorganization of the police department depart-ment was provided for in an ordinance passed by the city commission last night. Under this reorganization a detective de-tective bureau, with a chief of detectives detec-tives in charge, will be established, the position of lieutenant is created and a property clerk provided for. It is expected that Joseph C. Sharp, former sheriff of Salt Lake county, will become chief of the detective bureau, and under the provisions -of the amended amend-ed ordinance he will be responsible only to the chief of police. ilis salary is fixed at $1500 la year. William Keyting will become lieutenant lieu-tenant of police and will be the ranking officer on duty between 11 p. m. and 7 a. m. His salary is increased $lo a month. The property clerk will be charged with the responsibility for all property taken to the police station. Petition Opposed. The ordinance also provides that not more .than ten patrolmen shall be regularly reg-ularly assigned to detective duty, although al-though should emergency arise other patrolmen pa-trolmen may be detailed to temporary plain clothes duty. At the invitation of W. (.'. Orem of the interurban road the members of the city commission will inspect Seventh West street Wednesday afternoon. The Orem interests have announced that they will ask for a franchise 'permitting, the use of this street for freight track purposes. The petition will meet with strong opposition, it is expected, several extensively signed protests having already al-ready been filed against the sought-for franchise. After inspecting the street with the Orem representatives, the commission will give audience to the protestants. Asks Better Pay. A communication was received from Mrs. Nellie Pickett stating that, because be-cause of the advanced prices of some foodstuffs, she is unable longer to feed the city prisoners at the rate of 10 cents per meal, and asking that the compensation be increased to 1.5 cents per meal. The matter was referred to the department of public safety. A new sanitation ordinance covering the maintenance of barns and chicken coops near houses within the citv was introduced and laid over for one week. The proponed ordinance provides that no barn shall be maintained within forefeet fore-feet of a residence, and that all barn's must have cement floors. Chicken coops and runways must not be within twenty-five twenty-five feet of dwellings. Another ordinance covering the adulteration adul-teration of oils and providing new regulations reg-ulations regarding weights and measures was also laid over for one week. Ordinances were also passed providing provid-ing for some of the minor salarv changes recently authorized'iu the budget mooting. |
