Five determined counter attacks by the Germans were , beaten back by the British in the Pozieres sector today, while on both the Somme and Meuse the French continued con-tinued to make gains. An entire line of German defenses on a half mile front from the wood north of Hem to the Somme was captured in a spectacular assault by General Foch 's troops. On the Verdun front General Xivelle threw his forces forward in new attacks in which a further gain was registered south of the Thiaumont work and more fortified houses in.Fleury were taken. The Germans for more than 13 hours have been striving desperately to develop de-velop a counter offensive against the British, but all their attempts have met with failure. Hold All Ground Gained. Preceding the five furious attacks today, to-day, numerous attempts were made last night to penetrate the British trenches east of Pozieres. General Haig tonight reports that the English hold all the ground gained in yesterday 's attacks. On the Verdun front during the night the Germans also determinedly launched attack after attack, only to be repulsed by the French barrier and machine gun fire. Both at Thiaumont and in the Vaux-Chapitre woods tne German infantry infan-try was sent forward after strong artillery artil-lery preparation, only to be driven back without having gained a foot of ground. Capture Machine Guns. During the day the French and British Brit-ish captured a number of German prison-, ers and took ,15 machine guns. Three more German aeroplanes have been shot down, according to a Paris statement. French bombarding squadrons during the night carried out extensive operations opera-tions behind the G erman front and Berlin admits some damage was done to the great fortress of Metz by the aerial bombardment. FRENCH REPULSE ENEMY ATTACKS AT ALL POINTS PARTS, Aug. 7. noon. The repulse of German attacks at Thiaumont ami in the Vaux and Chapitre woods in the Verdun sector Is announced in the official statement state-ment issued by the French war office this afternoon. The statement records a vigorous artillery ar-tillery duel north of tlie Somme and in the region of Chatilnes. The French screen tire checked the German attack at Thiaumont. In tlie Yaux-Chapitre woods the Germans preceded their attack by a heavy bombardment, but their efforts" to advance were frustrated by tlie machine gun fire and rifle fire of the French. BRITISH REPULSE FIERCE ATTACKS BY THE GERMANS LONDON, Aug. 7, 11:51 p. m, Determined Deter-mined attacks on the British lines north and northeast of Pozieres this morning were repulsed, according to the British official statement Issued tonight. The Germans succeeded in entering the British Brit-ish lines at one or two points, but were driven out. & The text of the statement reads: North and northeast of Pozieres the enemy delivered' two determined attacks at-tacks on our lines between 4 and 5 o'clock In the morning. After a heavy bombardment, he entered our trenches at one or two places, but was driven out again, suffering manv casualties and leaving some prisoners in our hands. Two further strong attacks were made at 8:50 in the morning, with exactly ex-actly similar results. Soon after 4 in the afternoon another feeble atlack was repulsed and more prisoners were taken. At Zwartelen the enemy sprang another an-other small mine without effect. The enemy artillery has been active near Bethune, La Bassee canal and Loos. The result In casualties and damage was negligible. Our guns retaliated vigorously. FRENCH CAPTURE POSTS AT VERDUN AND ON SOMME PARIS, Aug. 7, 10:55 p. m. Late today the French troops captured a line of German Ger-man trenches between Hem wood and the Somme, according to the official state-i state-i ment issued by the war office tonight. They also made some progress south of ! the Thlaumont work. The night statement says: North of the Somme, at the end of the afternoon, our troops brilliantly carried a line of German trenches between be-tween Hem wood and the river, east of Monacu farm. One hundred and twenty prisoners and about ten machine ma-chine guns remained In our hands. South of the Somme our artillery was very active. Enemv batteries In the region of LI turns were effectively shelled. On the right bank of the Meuse, in the course of a smalt action, we made progress south of the Thiaumont work. We took five machine guns and found in the conquered elements numerous German dead. After a somewhat spirited engagement, we captured some houses in the western part of the village of Fleury. Our lines in the region of Vaux, Le Chapitre and Ohenols were subjected sub-jected to a bombardment. More Steamers Sunk. LONDON, Aug. 7, 4:30 p. m Llovd's shipping agency announced that the Italian Ital-ian sailing vessel Eugenia and the Norwegian Nor-wegian steamer Aranda have been sunk. A report that the British steamer Spiral has been sunk, says the agency, is unconfirmed. un-confirmed. Irish Woman a Soldier. PARIS, Aug. 7, 7:15 a. m. Miss Flora Sandes, an Irish woman, who is a sergeant ser-geant in the Serbian army, has arrived at Toulon on her way to rejoin her regiment regi-ment after a holiday in. Ireland, according to the JYfatln. Miss Sandes was In Serbia when the war broke out and joined a hospital as a nurse. Later on she enlisted as a regular regu-lar soldier and went through the last campaign, taking part in the disastrous retreat to Duranzo. |
